How to spot a scam text
Scam texts try to rush or frighten you. Pausing is your best protection.
- Pause. Don’t click, don’t reply, don’t send money.
- Ask: was I expecting this message?
- Look for pressure — “urgent”, “within 24 hours”, threats or fines.
- Look for requests — money, codes, passwords, or bank details. Real banks never ask for these by text.
- Look for links or attachments you weren’t expecting.
- If it claims to be your bank, HMRC, Royal Mail, the NHS, the police, or a delivery company — check with them yourself, using a number or website you already trust.
- Then delete the message.
Scams catch clever, careful people every day. Checking first is exactly the right thing to do.
