How to make your phone read aloud

Your phone can read almost anything on its screen out loud — messages, websites, the lot. It’s built in and free.

  1. On an iPhone or iPad: open Settings ⚙️, tap Accessibility, then Spoken Content.
  2. Turn on “Speak Screen”. From now on, swiping down from the very top of the screen with two fingers together makes the phone read the whole page aloud.
  3. If you like, turn on “Speak Selection” too — then whenever you select a word, a “Speak” button appears.
  4. On an Android phone or tablet: open Settings ⚙️ and look for Accessibility, then “Select to Speak” — on some Samsung phones it sits inside “Spoken assistance”. Turn it on.
  5. A small button appears at the edge of the screen. Tap it, then tap anything on screen — or drag your finger across a whole passage — and the phone reads it out.
  6. On a computer: in Microsoft Edge, right-click any page and choose “Read aloud”. On a Mac, Spoken Content lives in System Settings under Accessibility.

From now on, your phone can read to you anywhere — not just here.
