What to do if you think you have been scammed
Act calmly and quickly. These steps protect you — and reporting helps protect others.
- Don’t be embarrassed. Scams catch clever, careful people every day.
- If money or bank details are involved: call your bank now, using the phone number on the back of your card — never a number from the message.
- Tell the bank plainly: “I think I may have been scammed. Please secure my account.”
- Report it to Report Fraud (formerly Action Fraud): 0300 123 2040, or actionfraud.police.uk.
- If you shared a password, change it — and anywhere else that used the same one.
- Tell someone you trust. Saying it out loud helps, and they can support you with the calls.
The bank staff handle this every single day. They will not be cross with you — helping is their job.
