How to ask for help safely
Everyone needs a hand with technology sometimes. Here’s how to get help without putting yourself at risk.
- Ask someone you already know and trust — family, a friend, or staff at your local library.
- Be specific: “Can you help me set up video calling?” is easier to help with than “I can’t do phones.”
- Keep hold of your own device — let helpers guide you while your hands do the tapping.
- Never share your password, PIN, or bank details — not even with helpers. Genuine helpers never need them.
- Be careful with anyone who phones offering “help” you didn’t ask for — real support never cold-calls.
- Libraries and Age UK often run free, patient digital help sessions. Asking is a confident move, not a defeat.
Needing help with technology says nothing about your abilities — everyone borrows know-how for something.
